Fair Queen

  • As part of 2016's Fair theme of "Kith, Kin and Community" we wanted to change the way we chose our Fair Queen. Instead of the old beauty pageant style selection process where people would put themselves forward for voting, we decided to change it to a nomination process where candidates were nominated based on good deeds and as role models for our community.

We ended up with four candidates and as they all represented the theme of the fair so perfectly we decided to celebrate them all and retitle them to be the Ditchling Village Gems!

On Saturday the 5th March we had a Celebration Evening where we introduced the Village Gems to Ditchling Village and interviewed both them and the people who nominated them. Below are the interviews...

  • The Morning Fair starts at around 8.30am in the closed-to-traffic West Street. The Wizard will wake up the village, with the bells of St Margarets acting as our snooze alarm. There will be stalls of food, produce and information available - come and have your Fair-day breakfast in Ditchling's West Street.

The Fair Proclamation will be read by The Rev. David Wallis and the bestowing of the Village Gems.

Ditchling Morris and their guest Side, Knots of May, will entertain you with a variety of energetic dances.

Ditchling Mummers (as previously seen outside the Ditchling Museum on Boxing Day) will perform a Sussex play of battle and intrigue.

The world-famous Jack & Jill Race will take place - all-comers, suitably dressed, are welcome.

Other music and entertainment will be arranged.

Fair Programmes with full timings are £1.00 and are available from around the village.

  • Dtchling Fair Committee are seeking nominations for Village Gems for Ditchling Fair, Saturday 16th June 2018

Do you know someone who goes above and beyond to enhance the life of Ditchling village and it’s community?
Do they live in the village?
Are they 12 or over and know they’re being nominated?

If the answer to all of the above is yes, then we would love to hear from you* in order that the whole Village can thank them in style at the 2018 fair!

Keep Coming Back

About Ditchling Fair

In 1312 King Edward II granted John de Warenne, Lord of the Manor, the right to run a Fair in Ditchling 'in the eve and in the day and in the morrow of St Margaret the Virgin' and thus was to be celebrated on July 20th.
