Friendship, Frivolity & the Future. We asked every household in the Village to get creative and let their imagination run wild, and they did. Voting for the scarecrows closed at noon on 9th May 2020.

Two figures: a mother with baby (and glass of wine!), symbolising the future, reaching out in friendship to a Green Man/ tree representing the natural world.

Stan represents a concerned member of Ditcling and his aim is to slow down traffic on Common Lane. Our scaecrow is related to the future part of the theme, we are looking at encouraging a slower paced future where people are kind and considerate to each other and the world we share.

Constructed of trees cut down from the garden, the scarecrow reminds us of the need to make the most of social media during the lockdown and the fun and frivolity that it can give us into the future.

Beak-on Bob is isolating at the bottom of the Beacon. Making the most of a 'rubbish' situation has allowed us to creat Bob, a frugal feathered friend to all who passes by, full of frivolity and fun!

The plan is to make 3 small scarecrows of children playing- with a sign 'the future is playing with my friends again' (Eva can’t wait to be with her friends again). Topical we thought? I hope we can pull it off....

With seven weeks to go, we’re sad that we have to postpone the 2020 Ditchling Fair.
We have closely monitored government advice, in the hope that should we have come out of the current situation in early June, the whole village could unite in an amazing celebration.
It’s clear this is now unachievable. However, all is not lost. When we can safely come together once more, we will celebrate with the mother of all parties. We don’t know what that looks like yet but it will be vaguely fair-shaped.
What times we are living in. With lock-downs and school-closures... in Ditchling we’ve decided to not let it get us down!!
With our own Ditchling 75th Anniversary VE Day Celebration cancelled, and with so much going on in the world right now we’ve decided to hold the Ditchling Scarecrow Celebration a month early.
Listen to Ditchling Fair joint Chair, Jack Daniels, talk on BBC Sussex about the 2020 Scarecrow Competition. Aired on the Mid-Morning show on 30th March 2020. We'd like to clarify a very important point about the recently launched village scarecrow competition.
The point of bringing the competition forward (to now rather than early May) is to give families and those isolating at home alone something positive, constructive and fun to focus on in these uncertain times. We want to foster a spirit of togetherness at a time when we have no choice but to physically distance ourselves from one another.
We want you to help us make the 2020 Ditchling Fair Scarecrow Competition the best ever. To this end, please download and display a poster in your window and help us spread the word.
